FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

General carpet information

How do I know that the colours of the carpets shown on my screen are accurately displayed?

All our photos and videos depict the carpet’s colors in the most accurate way possible. Due to the differences in computer monitors, color shades may vary slightly.

How accurate is the information regarding each carpet?

We strive to provide our customers with as much information as possible to make the purchase experience as convenient as possible.

Each and every carpet on the Carpet Avenue website has been carefully inspected by our purchasers during the buying process. The carpets are once again inspected with the taking of the photos and will undergo a third and final inspection during the packing stage.

If any information is found to be inaccurate, the customer will always be notified prior to shipment.

Do the measurements of the carpets include the fringes?

The measurements indicated on the website never include the fringes. It should also be noted that due to being made by hand, a slight variation in size and shape can occur in handknotted/woven carpets. This applies particularly to nomadic/village carpets that have been woven under more modest conditions.

Why do handmade carpets have some imperfections?

Due to the very nature of these carpets, unintentional imperfections are bound to exist. The carpets are woven by hand and these slight variations should be considered as part of the charm and uniqueness of the carpet, adding to its overall value.

Generally speaking, there will be more apparent and visible imperfections in nomadic carpets since they are woven on more primitive looms in rural areas than workshop carpets.

How do I calculate the knot density of a carpet?

The knot density of a carpet is the number of knots per square metre and can easily be calculated on any handknotted carpet you have. Simply chose an even spot on the backside of the carpet and count the number of knots along a 1 cm long line, both vertically and horizontally. Multiply the numbers with each other and then multiply your answer by 10,000 i.e. 3 knots horizontally x 4 knots vertically = 12 x 10,000 = 120,000 knots per square metre.

Why does my carpet shed/fluff?

It is not uncommon for a new carpet to shed, this is nothing to worry about and something that will gradually disappear within the first few weeks of use. The fluff you see is simply excess fibres that were trapped in the pile of the carpet during the cutting process that is now being released and surfacing to the top of the pile.

With some patience and regular vacuuming (1-2 times a week) in the direction of the pile, this will gradually disappear.

There is little use in trying to speed up this natural process - it will only cause extra, unnecessary wear to your carpet.

In Persian carpets you will notice that the shedding stops after a few vacuuming sessions, but in Indian carpets it might take a little longer.

Are the carpets at Carpet Avenue made by children?

The buyers at CarpetAvenue continuously monitor and inspect the workshops, villages and premises where our carpets are sourced and produced for any signs of involvement of child labour or critical working conditions.

In the event that any breach should be discovered, the partnership is terminated with immediate effect.

Carpet care and maintenance

How do I vacuum my carpet?

Vacuuming is important in order to get rid of gravel, sand and dirt particles that would otherwise remain stuck in the pile of the carpet.

It is recommended to vacuum once a week and never more than twice. Excess vacuuming only inflicts unnecessary wear and tear, thereby speeding up the aging process. When vacuuming, make sure the suction power is not set to the highest level and that the nozzle is always lifted after every move. Never push it back and forth on the carpet and never vacuum the fringes as this can cause the carpet to unravel.

Vacuuming should always be done in the direction of the pile – start by checking with your hand, if the pile feels smooth when you stroke your hand along it then this is the right direction. If on the other hand it feels rough and rises as you move your hand along it, then this is against the pile and the wrong direction.

If need may be, how should I store my carpet?

If you ever need to store your carpet keep in mind that it is made of natural fibers and should be able to breathe.

Never store your carpet in a damp and moist area such as a basement or garage. Make sure the carpet is gently rolled, with the direction of the pile inwards and securely tied with a couple of straps to avoid it unraveling.

Ideally wrap it up in a protective cotton or linen bedsheet with moth balls and store it laying (under the bed for example), never in an upright position as it could lose its shape over time.

If you need to store the carpet for a longer period of time it is recommended to unroll and vacuum it once every three months and to replace the mothballs as the effect diminishes over time.

How do I get rid of folds and creases in my carpet?

Folds and creases normally disappear on their own if the carpet is allowed to lay flat for a few days. Wool has a natural tendency to rise and regain its shape and with normal daily use the folds and crease lines should gradually diminish.

If they are persistent, lay some heavy books or other safe items on the fold or crease line to speed up the process. If you do not see any signs of improvement, another tip is to soak a cloth in cold water, rinse it out and lay it on the area with the marks. Then take a flat-iron and carefully iron over the cloth a few times, always in the direction of the pile.

Is it possible to wash my carpet myself?

It is never recommended to wash a handknotted or handwoven carpet yourself. If this needs to be done you should always hand in your carpet to a reputable carpet cleaning professional.

How do I get rid of stains?

The number one rule when dealing with any stain is to act fast. If the stain is allowed to dry, there is always a risk that it will not be entirely reversible, no matter what steps you take. To be on the safe side you should have a mild and powerful stain remover, suitable for handknotted carpets at home.

For further information on how to deal with different kinds of stains, please refer to our Carpet Care section.
