Ziegler carpets were first created by the eminent Swiss trading family Ziegler in the late 19th century. Due to the political unrest of the Persian Empire and strong carpet demand from the West, Ziegler decided to set up his own production in Sultanabad, Pakistan and employ some of the top carpet weavers to cater for this growing demand. With the western market in mind, the first original carpet designs were successfully commissioned in 1883. The carpets fetch their inspiration from classical Persian carpet design from the Arak district of modern day Iran. Ziegler carpets are extremely affordable and a great way of adding a touch of refined elegance to your home.
The wool used is of high quality and the colour palette, consisting of natural vegetable dyes, is softer and more subtle than that of Persian carpets. Ziegler carpets are stonewashed to give them a natural sheen and beautiful antique finish look. The shorter pile makes it easy to keep the carpet clean and very suitable for use under a dining table as no food and crumbs can get stuck in the pile. Ziegler carpets are easily recognized by their characteristically open field, bearing no central medallion and a rather thick sparsely decorated border.
The carpets were traditionally made with a light beige/cream background, but can be found in a wide range of colour combinations of ivory, cream, red, black or blue that perfectly complement the modern interior style of western homes.
