Turkish / Anatolian

Turkish carpets, sometimes also referred to as Anatolian carpets are renowned for their beauty, intricate designs and cultural significance. With a rich history dating back thousands of years, these carpets are fully comparable to their Persian counterparts.

The carpets are knotted with the Turkish knot, also called Turkbaff or the Ghiordes knot. This is a double knot which makes the carpets stronger and more durable.

Historically Turkish carpet making has its roots and origins from the nomadic tribes of the Turks in Central Asia. These nomads made woven Kelim (Gilim) carpets, purely for the functional purpose of serving as floor coverings and protective warming accessories for the tents in which they lived.

The first handknotted Turkish carpets were knotted in the city of Konya in the 13 century during the Seljuk Empire era. Over time the art of carpet making spread to other areas and Turkish carpets from Konya (Iconium), Kayseri (Cesaria), Usak (Oushak) and Bergama (Pergamon) became increasingly popular. These carpets decorated the palaces of European dynasties for centuries.

Today, Turkish carpets continue to adorn homes and interior spaces worldwide. Whether displayed on walls or gracing floors, Turkish carpets are a testament to the enduring artistry and craftsmanship of modern day Turkey.
